What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

Last updated: August 16, 2026 · By Madhu Dadi

Direct answer

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content discoverable, extractable, and citable by AI answer systems such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Unlike classic SEO that optimizes for ranked blue links, AEO prioritizes clear definitions, structured answers, schema markup, and search-visibility bot access so models can extract your pages. Allow ≠ cited; extractability does not guarantee a citation.

Why AEO matters now

A growing share of searches surfaces AI-generated summaries. If your page is blocked by robots.txt, incomplete after JavaScript rendering, or written only as marketing fluff without extractable facts, answer engines skip you — even when you rank for traditional SEO.

Google’s guidance for AI features still centers on helpful, people-first content and core SEO fundamentals. Non-Google engines additionally reward explicit structure: FAQs, comparison tables, and short self-contained answer blocks.

Core AEO technical checklist

Allow search-visibility bots in robots.txt (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ChatGPT-User). Allow ≠ cited.

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended are training/grounding tokens. Adticks allows them as product choice; they are not citation switches. You may still block pure training scrapers such as CCBot.

Ensure critical content is present in server HTML or reliably rendered for headless bots (render parity).

Use clear H1–H3 hierarchy, FAQPage/HowTo schema where appropriate, and 40–60 word definition blocks that stand alone.

Show freshness (“last updated”), author expertise, and outbound citations for claims.

FAQ

Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap. AEO emphasizes answer extractability; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) emphasizes earning citations in generative engines. Both need access, structure, and authority.
Do I need special schema only for AI?
Google does not require AI-only schema. Standard FAQ, Article, Organization, and Product schema still help machines understand entities and Q&A.
